Light Plans

Today, everyone can see the light in Lyon : everyone walking the streets during the night sees how light merges with the architecture of Lyon, lovingly revealing the city’s treasures.

The Light Plan, associated with the excellence of Lyonnais skills, has made Lyon a major centre in the “light design” and urban lighting fields, for both temporary and permanent works.

Started in 1989, the first Light Plan was a political, artistic and technical pioneer. The organisation of the permanent lighting gave the City a new face and led to the lighting of more than 250 sites throughout the City. Since then light has been more than just part of nighttime security: it has become an essential aspect of urban development.

In 2004, fifteen years later, the second Light Plan added to and enhanced the first. This time around, light was added to the monuments, and was modulated to harmonise with the activities and rhythms of the City, focusing on the rivers, hills, silhouettes and main arterial roads...

Recognized as a distinct art and profession, urban lighting now forms an essential part of the profile of metropolitan Lyon at an international level. Lyonnais “light” companies, designers, artists and architects are sought around the world and their talents prized at prestigious sites: the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, the Castillo del Morro in Havana, the Ho Chi Minh City Museum, the Riadh El-Feth Monument in Algiers, the Menara in Marrakesh and the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur.

Specific light training has been developed in parallel with this engineering (professional licence “Lighting design management”, for example), and has a national events presence.

Ultimate date : the LumiVille trade show, next may 27 and 29.
